12mo. pp. 394 (vi advertisements). First annual to contain steel engravings (Hunnisett [1980] p 140). Contains 12 illustrations engraved on steel by Charles Heath, and undoubtedly printed by Perkins and Heath, who introduced steel engravings in Britain in 1819. The literary annuals were published at the end of the preceding year with a view the Christmas book sales. Publisher’s apple-green boards with all-over printed decoration, preserved in the original slipcase with similarly decorated design, the hinges expertly repaired, a fine copy with the original slipcase preserved which is rarely encountered, a.e.g. Faxon 1299.
