Rome, apud haer. Antonio Blado, 1567

FIRST EDITION. Folio. 2 unnumbered ll. Roman letter, title in large Gothic. Pius V’s woodcut device to title (holed in blank), decorated initial. A very good, crisp copy of this scarce papal bull issued by Pius V in the second year of his pontificate. A ‘motus proprius’ was a bull devised not after a petition or request but upon the Pope’s own initiative. In this case, the bull confirmed and extended the privileges of the mercantile guild of the ‘art of wool’, dating back to the C14, in order to revive it from its collapse and to improve its competitiveness against the import of woollen cloth from other cities like Florence through legal and financial exemptions. Antonio Blado and his heirs were ‘stampatori camerali’ in charge of printing official documents of the Papal States including a great amount of bulls which, due to their ephemeral nature, have rarely survived unscathed.

No copies recorded in the US. USTC 837158; EDIT 16 CNCE 42837; Goldsmiths I, 116. Not in BM STC It or Kress.
