Fables. Volume the Second.
London, J. and P. Knapton in Ludgate-Street and T. Cox, under the Royal Exchange, 1738.
FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (viii) 155. A clean, white copy with crisp impressions of the plates in rebacked contemporary calf.
Although titled “Volume the Second,” this is a totally independent collection of new fables, published posthumously 11 years after the publication of “Volume the First.” With seventeen full page engravings after Gravelot, which “may be placed beside the best of Boucher’s illustrations (Hammelmann, Book Illustrators in 18th Century England, p. 40). There is an identical edition in 4to. published in 1738, but the 8vo. is considered to be the real first edition (Hammelmann, p. 43).
