The Fables of Aesop and Others, with Designs on Wood. By Thomas Bewick.
Newcastle, printed by E. Walker, for T. Bewick and Son, sold by them, Longman and Co. London, 1818.
Royal 8vo., pp. (xxiv) 376. Half calf, expertly re-backed in the style of the period. Old inscription on the title page, an attractive copy of a scarce book.
FIRST EDITION. Alongside with the “Birds” and the “Quadrupeds,” this is Bewick’s finest book. The Royal 8vo. issue was much better printed than the ordinary 8vo. issue, because of its much thicker and more absorbent paper. The total number of copies of this book is estimated to be only 2,000.
Roscoe 45b (500 copies printed) Variant B, with “candour” and “prudence” on p. 248. No subscription leaf. (Roscoe, ibid.), which makes Bewick’s Aesop a much rare book than all Bewick’s other works.
